Tashkent, Uzbekistan, April 27, 2020: International Judo Federation President Marius Vizer has suggested that the 2021 World Championships in Tashkent could double up as the Olympic qualifier.

“The 2021 World Championships may be the qualifying stage for the Tokyo Olympics. However, the final decision will be made after the end of the pandemic,” the Uzbekistan National Olympic Committee quoted Vizer as saying earlier this month.

With the spread of the coronavirus worldwide, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics was postponed to July 23 to August 8, 2021.

The statement issued by the Uzbekistan NOC press service added: “In this regard, if the World Championships in Tashkent will become the qualifying stage for the Olympics, then, most probably, it will be held in May 2021.”

Following Tashkent, the 2022 Judo World Championships will be held in Budapest, Hungary, and the 2023 showpiece in Doha, Qatar.
