Astana, Kazakhstan, November 27, 2025: Former world boxing champion Gennady Golovkin was elected unopposed as President of World Boxing – and one his main goals is to restore trust in the sport.
Golovkin, President of the National Olympic Committee of Kazakhstan, stood unopposed for the top boxing position at World Boxing’s annual congress in Rome last Sunday.
“I am here to fight for something important – the future of boxing itself,” Golovkin told delegates at the Congress, vowing to restore boxing’s long-term place at future Olympic Games.
The IOC ran the boxing competition at the 2020 and 2024 Olympics after the sports previous governing body, the International Boxing Association, was expelled from the Olympic movement.
“With your help, I will do everything to restore trust in World Boxing. Together we can achieve full IOC recognition and secure our place not only at Los Angeles 2028 but at all future Olympics,” the BBC quoted Golovkin as saying.
Golovkin, who won the Olympic silver medal in the middleweight division at the 2004 Games in Athens, also held the professional world middleweight title.
On his return home from Rome, the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev congratulated Golovkin and awarded him with the 1st Degree Barys Order for his outstanding work towards the development of domestic sports.
