Manama, Bahrain, October 22, 2025: Singapore will use the 3rd Asian Youth Games in Bahrain as a platform to test-run several promising athletes who have shown glimpses of being able to perform on a bigger international stage according to Chef de Mission Dr. Low Chee Yong.

Speaking on the eve of the Bahrain showcase – from October 22-31 – Dr. Low revealed that these games will also be an opportunity for the city-state’s youngsters to “benchmark” themselves against the region’s best young athletes.

Singapore will be fielding 54 athletes in 11 sports at the Bahrain AYG. The sports are athletics, badminton, equestrian, golf, jiu-jitsu, pencak silat, taekwondo, swimming, table tennis, triathlon and wrestling.

“Among our contingent, we have several promising athletes who have shown strong performances in recent regional and youth competitions. We’re looking forward to seeing how they step up on this bigger stage, especially in sports such as swimming, athletics, badminton and table tennis, where Singapore has traditionally seen emerging talent,” noted Dr Low.

“The Asian Youth Games is an excellent platform for young athletes to compete at a high level. It gives them early exposure to the experience of a major multi-sports Games, helps them understand what it means to represent Team Singapore, and prepares them for a bigger stage such as the Youth Olympic Games and the Olympic Games,” Dr Low pointed out.

“Our hope is for every athlete to give their best and aim for personal breakthroughs at these Games. It’s also an opportunity to benchmark themselves against the region’s best, and for us to assess how we can further support their development to the next level,” he said.

Singapore is fortunate in that the system helps promising young athletes – the city’s High Performance Institute provides a range of support systems to help athletes achieve their sporting aspirations, including such initiatives like the Spex Scholarship.

Swimmer Joseph Schooling, who delivered Singapore’s first-ever Olympic gold medal, was a former recipient of the Spex Scholarship and continues to inspire Singaporeans, both in sport and life, to pursue excellence.

The spotlight will be on six athletes who will represent Singapore in Bahrain as well as in Thailand in December at the 2025 SEA Games. The six are: Shannon Tan (athletics), Chiara Mei Corbi (equestrian), Julia Yeo and Ted Windsor Chan (swimming), Jemma Hadden (triathlon), and Loy Ming Ying (table tennis).
