New Delhi, India, April 19, 2020: Indian sports minister  Kiren Rijiju has targeted a top-10 finish in the medal standings for India by the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Rijiju said on Saturday, April 18, that the Ministry, the Indian Olympic Association and the National Sports Federations are working together to improve the overall sports ecosystem in the country and focusing on finishing among the top 10 in the 2028 Olympics.

In a statement released, Rijiju said “the common goals of the Sports Ministry, the Indian Olympic Association and the National Sports Federations are:

(a)  Improving the overall sports ecosystem of the country with a focus on identifying and nurturing grassroots talents on the one hand and grooming elite athletes to achieve sporting excellence on the other.

(b)  Providing the best facilities to our athletes in terms of training, diet and top-level competition exposure.

(c)  To ensure India finishes in the Top 10 in the 2028 Olympics, an ambitious target declared by me as Sports Minister of the Country,” Rijiju said.

Rijiju explained that the goal can only be achieved by the proper coordination between the Sports Ministry, Sports Authority of India, Indian Olympic Association and National Sports Federations.

“Government is committed to work closely with all NSFs and Indian Olympic Association to ensure that there is no gap in the communications between stakeholders. While reviewing the critical sporting activities, the autonomous function of the NSFs must be maintained at any costs,” the statement read.
