Thimphu, Bhutan, September 4, 2025: HRH Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck, President of the Bhutan Olympic Committee, granted an audience to Dechen Dorji - bronze medal winner at the U22 & U19 Asian Boxing Championships - and the Bhutan Boxing Federation during a felicitation ceremony on Wednesday, September 3.
His Royal Highness presented special cash awards and congratulatory certificates to athlete Dorji and his coach Girchungla, recognising the outstanding achievement at the Asian Boxing Championships held in Bangkok, Thailand in August.
Addressing the gathering Prince Wangchuck emphasised the importance of striving for excellence within Bhutan’s sporting community. He noted that despite being a small nation, accomplishments like this showcase Bhutan’s growing potential and capability on the international stage.
Prince Wangchuck also said: “Bhutan has truly punched above its weight, not only defeating a significantly larger nation (Dorji beat an opponent from Chinese Taipei to secure the bronze) but also securing a medal on the international stage.”
HRH expressed his heartfelt admiration to Dorji and other boxers, the Bhutan Boxing Federation, and the Royal Bhutan Army for their dedication and hard work. He affirmed that the BOC and the Royal Bhutan Army will continue discussions to strengthen support for athletes and foster their development.
Also attending the ceremony were Goongloen Batoo Tshering, Boxing Federation President Brigadier Rinzin Dorji, Vice President Lieutenant Colonel Sanjay Jamtsho, and General Secretary Captain Ngawang Tobgay.
