Baghdad, Iraq, August 31, 2025: The President of the National Olympic Committee of Iraq, Dr. Aqeel Muften, has received a letter from International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry acknowledging the congratulations from the Iraqi NOC on her election to the top IOC post.
In a letter dated August 21, the IOC President also thanked Dr. Muften for his support to actively promote women’s sport in Iraq - which he had conveyed to Coventry during the OCA General Assembly in May this year - and promised to support it.
Coventry wrote: “Thank you for kind and thoughtful congratulations on my election as President of the International Olympic Committee. Your words of encouragement and warm wishes mean a great deal to me.
“With the continued support of friends of the Olympic Movement like you, I am confident that we can further strengthen the values of excellence, friendship, and respect that the Olympic Games represent.
“Also, thank you for your project to actively support women’s sport in Iraq, which we discussed briefly at the occasion of the OCA General Assembly in Kuwait. I have asked Olympic Solidarity to study your proposal as many of the elements align well with the IOC’s vision of promotion of women’s sports across the world. They will revert to you shortly with some ideas on how to take this forward.
“Once again, thank you for your message, and I wish you all the best in your endeavours,” Coventry added.
