Asian boxing mourns Beket Makhmutov of Kazakhstan

Abu Dhabi, UAE, April 15, 2020: The Asian boxing community is mourning the passing of Beket Makhmutov, a former President of the Kazakhstan Boxing Federation. He was 82.

The President of the Asian Boxing Confederation and Vice President of the International Boxing Association (AIBA), Mr. Anas Alotaiba, expressed his sincere condolences on behalf of the ASBC management to the family of Mr. Makhmutov and to the Kazakhstan Boxing Federation.

In a statement, the ASBC said: “Mr. Beket Sapabekovich Makhmutov was a Master of Sports in boxing in the Soviet Union, an honoured trainer and a well-known official who had enthusiasm for combat sports. 

“Following his hard work as a coach, the independent Kazakhstan’s boxing grew up rapidly; during his era, stars such as Vasiliy Zhirov, Bekzat Sattarkhanov, Yermakhan Ibraimov and Bakhtiyar Artayev won Olympic titles for the Central Asian boxing power.

“Mr. Beket Makhmutov was President of the Kazakhstan Boxing Federation between 1993 and 2000. As a former President of the Asian Boxing Bureau, he served the International Boxing Association (AIBA) as Vice President and Chairman of its Finance Committee between 1996 and 2006.

“He supported the development of Kazakhstan’s judo as President of the Federation and also President of the Asian Judo Union. Mr. Beket Makhmutov was Vice President of the Kazakhstan National Olympic Committee in the last years of his active life.”

The ASBC noted that an international competition was named after him – the Beket Makhmutov Prizes Youth Tournament in the city of Uralsk in Kazakhstan. The last edition was held in 2017.
