Phnom Penh, Cambodia, April 15, 2020: The President of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC) and Minister of Tourism Dr. Thong Khon led a delegation from China to see the progress of the new sports complex on the outskirts of the capital.
The Morodok Techo National Sports Complex is being built for Cambodia’s historic hosting of the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in 2023 and includes a 75,000-capacity football and athletics stadium, an indoor stadium seating 15,000 spectators and a swimming complex.
Dr. Thong Khon invited Chinese construction representatives to check on the progress of the new stadium on the occasion of the traditional Khmer New Year.
As part of the visit they offered new year greetings to the director of engineering and the Khmer-Chinese workers building the complex.
The delegation heard that none of the workers had been affected by the COVID-19 crisis and that construction was on course due to the efforts of the management leaders.
The delegation heard that construction is 70 per cent complete and they hope to finish the main stadium by the end of this year.
Regarding directors and workers coming from China to Cambodia, the delegation learned that 14-day quarantine periods must be served before leaving China and also on entering Cambodia before the person can visit the complex, which is located in the northern suburbs of the capital.
The 30th SEA Games were held in the Philippines last November 30-December 11 and the 2021 edition will be in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Cambodia will have the honour of hosting the 11-country regional sports extravaganza in 2023 for the first time in SEA Games history dating back to 1959.
