Suphachalasai Stadium returns as SEA Games athletics venue after 40 years

Bangkok, Thailand, July 30, 2025: Thailand has set its sights on using the historic Suphachalasai Stadium as the main arena for athletics during the 33rd SEA Games this December.

This marks the first time in over four decades that Suphachalasai (National Stadium) will host the athletics competition since it last served as the venue during the SEA Games in 1985, the SEA Games Thailand 2025 organising committee reports.

The 33rd SEA Games are scheduled to take place from December 9-20, 2025, in the provinces of Bangkok, Chonburi and Songkhla.

The organising committee has held continuous meetings to monitor progress across all aspects, to ensure a smooth and well-coordinated event. The final decisions on venues of competition for each sport have been finalized.

Athletics, as one of the main highlights of the 33rd SEA Games, will feature a total of 47 events. It’s confirmed that Suphachalasai Stadium will serve as the venue for track and field.

The primary reason for choosing Suphachalasai is because the stadium has recently been upgraded to meet the standards of World Athletics, following Thailand’s hosting of the Asian Athletics Championships in 2023.

Additionally, the stadium’s location in downtown Bangkok makes it highly accessible and sports fans can easily reach the venue using various modes of public transportation to enjoy the events comfortably.

Formerly known as the National Stadium of Thailand, Suphachalasai is Thailand’s premier national sports venue. It is currently managed by the Department of Physical Education under the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. Located on Rama 1 Road in Wang Mai Subdistrict, Pathum Wan District, Bangkok, construction was completed in 1941 and became the ground of the men’s athletics tournament the same year.

The stadium is versatile, used for various sports and events. Its current seating capacity is 19,615 spectators. Facilities include four changing rooms for athletes, one referee room, one press room, a VIP lounge, a medical room and a press conference room.
