Hashimoto becomes first woman to lead Japanese Olympic Committee

Tokyo, Japan, July 11, 2025: Seven-time Olympian Seiko Hashimoto is the new President of the Japanese Olympic Committee.

The 60-year-old politician was elected President for the period 2025-2028 following the JOC Executive Board meeting on July 10 and becomes the first woman to lead the JOC.

Hashimoto competed in seven Olympic Games – as a speed skater in four consecutive Winter Olympics from 1984 to 1994 and as a track cyclist in three consecutive Summer Olympics from 1988 to 1996.

She was also President of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Organising Committee and is a champion of gender equity in sports.

Four-time Olympic fencer Yuki Ota, who is a Member of the International Olympic Committee, is the new JOC Secretary General.

In a letter to Executive Board members of the Olympic Council of Asia, to the OCA HQ, Organising Committees for the Asian Games and Asian Sports Federations dated July 11, 2025, the new President and Secretary General wrote: “We are pleased to inform you that we have been elected as President and Secretary General for the 2025-2028 period, following our Executive Board meeting on July 10.

“With your unwavering cooperation, we are truly dedicated to advancing the Olympic movement, here in Japan and around the world. 

“I sincerely appreciate your continued support and look forward to collaborating with you on our future endeavors.”
