AIPS Congress opens in Hong Kong

Hong Kong, China, June 30, 2025: Today marks a significant milestone with the official inauguration of the 26th International Sports Press Association (AIPS) Congress 2025 in Hong Kong, China. 

Running from June 30 to July 4, this historic event is the first of its kind to be hosted in Hong Kong. 

Organised by the Hong Kong Sports Press Association (HKSPA) under the theme of the "15th National Games of the People's Republic of China", the Congress unfolds with the inspiring message "We Are Ready" and welcomes approximately 100 media representatives from 30 countries and regions across Asia. 

This gathering not only showcases Hong Kong's exceptional capabilities in hosting large-scale sporting events but also highlights its vibrant sports culture.

To commemorate this momentous occasion, the HKSPA launched the Congress with a dynamic opening ceremony this morning at the NINA Hotel in Tsuen Wan West. 

The event was graced by a distinguished array of guests, including the Hon. Kenneth Fok, JP, President of the HKSPA, Legislative Councilor; Miss Rosanna Law Shuk-pui, JP, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; Mr. Gianni Merlo, President of AIPS; Mr. Heedon Jung, President of AIPS Asia; Mr. Zhou Jian, Director of Media and Broadcasting of the Olympic Council of Asia; and Mr. Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges GBS JP, Chief Executive Officer of The Hong Kong Jockey Club.

Additionally, a panel discussion including influential figures such as Kenneth Fok, Mr. Yeung Tak-keung, Head of the National Games Coordination Office (Hong Kong), Mr. Raymond Tam, Executive Director, Corporate Affairs of The Hong Kong Jockey Club - the Partner Sponsor for the Hong Kong region of the 15th National Games - and Mr. Tang King Shing, Director of Strategic Planning at Kai Tak Sports Park, provided invaluable insights into Hong Kong's preparations for this prestigious event.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Kenneth Fok stated: "The year 2025 stands to be a landmark year for Hong Kong's sports sector. With the official opening of the Kai Tak Sports Park, we are excited to collaborate with Guangdong and Macau to host the 15th National Games for the first time. 

"Hosting the AIPS Congress at this pivotal juncture is a tremendous honour for the Hong Kong Sports Press Association. It serves as a crucial platform to showcase Hong Kong's sports development to Asia and the world, reinforcing our status as a hub for international events and enhancing our global image."

In his address, Mr. Heedon Jung, President of AIPS Asia, emphasized the significance of convening the Congress in Hong Kong, calling it a monumental achievement for the association. "This conference not only fosters enhanced regional collaboration but also ignites new opportunities for partnership and growth among sports journalists throughout Asia."

Over the next five days, the agenda promises a rich exploration of vital topics addressing the future of sports journalism in Asia, training programmes for young sports reporters, strategic planning and cultural exchanges. A standout feature of the Congress will be a guided visit to the newly completed N Square Company Limited.
