Manila, Philippines, June 18, 2025: The Philippines’ first Olympic champion, Hidilyn Diaz, believes weightlifting is in safe hands after its debut appearance in a national student sports competition.

The “Palarong Pambansa” took place in Ilocos Norte from May 24-31 and featured weightlifting for the first time in the 65th edition of the national showdown for premier grassroots talent.

Diaz, who became the Philippines’ first Olympic champion at Tokyo 2020, feels that the long-term future of the sport is bright thanks to this grassroots participation.

“From my Olympic gold to their very first lift,” she commented about the new generation of weightlifters, inspired by Diaz herself.

“Weightlifting is now part of Palarong Pambansa—a huge win for our grassroots dreams. This is more than just a sport added to the roster. It’s a step forward for every young athlete who dreams of lifting their way to a better future.

“I’m grateful to be part of this moment in Ilocos, and even prouder to see our HD (Hidilyn Diaz) Weightlifting Academy kids compete at the National Weightlifting Championships in Dumaguete.”

Diaz thanked Milo for “championing sports and believing in Filipino youth. Together, let’s raise the next generation of gold medalists.”
