Asia Rugby President Qais Al-Dhalai lauds India’s new Rugby Premier League

New Delhi, India, June 18, 2025: Asia Rugby has extended its heartfelt congratulations to Rugby India and its esteemed partners on the historic launch of the Rugby Premier League.

India’s first-ever professional, franchise-based rugby sevens competition was welcomed by Asia Rugby which said it was a bold and visionary initiative marking a transformative milestone for rugby not only for India but across the region.

Asia Rugby President Qais Al-Dhalai said: “Asia Rugby views the RPL as a strategic breakthrough that will accelerate the development of elite talent, expand the sport’s footprint and inspire a new generation of players and fans across Asia.”

Rugby Premier League was launched on Sunday, June 15, in a glittering opening ceremony in Mumbai. Styled on cricket’s hit Indian Premier League, a total of six teams, all including some of the world’s best sevens players and local talent, will battle it out across 34 matches ending in a grand finale on June 29.

Al-Dhalai noted: “We commend Rugby India for its leadership and foresight, and we acknowledge the vital support of private investors, broadcasters and global rugby experts who have rallied behind this pioneering project. Their collective belief in India’s rugby potential is both timely and commendable.

“Asia Rugby stands fully committed to supporting the continued growth and success of Rugby Premier League and other such initiatives across Asia. The RPL is not just a new competition – it is a catalyst for sporting excellence, national pride and regional progress,” Al-Dhalai added.
