Kuwait City, Kuwait, May 15, 2025: The President of the Afghanistan National Olympic Committee, Dr. Wali Rahimi, met with both the present IOC President and future IOC President on the sidelines of the 45th OCA General Assembly in Kuwait.

In a Facebook post on May 15, Dr. Rahimi said he had discussed the present and future of the Olympic Movement in Afghanistan with the IOC President-elect Kirsty Coventry and the incumbent IOC President, Dr. Thomas Bach.

Coventry, a seven-time Olympic medallist and two-time Olympic swimming champion, will succeed Bach as the 10th IOC President on June 23 after winning the election for President at the IOC Session in Greece on March 20.

In this meeting, Dr. Hafizollah Wali Rahimi was joined by Mrs. Samira Asghari, IOC Member from Afghanistan, and Dr. Younes Popolzi, Secretary General of Afghanistan NOC.

“IOC President-elect Coventry appreciated the efforts of the Afghan NOC, despite the challenges and lack of facilities, and emphasized the IOC’s comprehensive support and cooperation with Afghan sports,” Dr. Wali Rahimi said.

“Also, the Olympic officials of the country appreciated the valuable contributions and constant support of Dr. Thomas Bach.

“In this meeting, the most important focus of the conversation was to examine the challenges and problems in the field of Afghanistan sports.”
