Kuwait City, Kuwait, May 11, 2025: Legendary Chinese basketball star Yao Ming still knows how to be the centrepiece of attention – being one of the star turns at the 45th OCA General Assembly in Kuwait on Sunday, May 11.
The former Houston Rockets star and Hall of Famer Yao, a guest of honour, reminded delegates at the General Assembly of the power sports has in breaking down barriers and uniting the youth of the world in a short speech at the opening ceremony.
“First of all, I would like to say that it is a great honour for me to be invited to the Opening Ceremony of this grand occasion,” started Yao, one of the most iconic international figures in NBA history.
“The Olympic Movement has always played a big part in my life and will continue to do so. This is why I am so grateful and happy to be with you here to share some experiences and memories.
“The Olympics prove that sports can overcome hurdles, break down barriers and unite the youth of the world behind one common goal and one noble movement,” said Yao, an eight-time NBA All-Star.
Addressing a distinguished audience including IOC President Thomas Bach and IOC President-Elect Kirsty Coventry, the 7 ft 6 inch Yao went down memory lane, harking back to the Sydney 2000 Olympics when he represented China in basketball.
“In Sydney, at the Games Village, I came across a photograph taken from the rooftop of athletes at the opening ceremony all looking up. I tried to find myself in the crowd - after all I’m tall - but failed. I then realised that I’m not that big and also that we are not alone, that we all can dream together,” he related.
Yao, 44, added: “Sports can break down barriers and open doors for young people around the world.”
