New Delhi, India, May 4, 2025: The President of the Indian Olympic Association, PT Usha, has led tributes to former national shooting coach Sunny Thomas, who passed away due to a cardiac arrest at the age of 84 on April 30.

The IOA President said Thomas inspired the Indian shooters to dream of Olympic gold and sparked a medal revolution in Indian shooting.

“His style of training, rooted in tireless commitment and hard work, heralded a medal revolution in Indian shooting. As the nation began shattering long-held barriers previously considered impossible and claiming historic achievements, it was Sunny Sir’s selfless, steadfast service that laid the foundation,” said Usha.

Thomas was coach of India’s national shooting team from 1993 to 2012. The highlight of this period was Abhinav Bindra’s historic gold medal in the men’s 10m air rifle at Beijing 2008 - the country’s first-ever individual Olympic gold medal.

Bindra posted on X: “Deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Prof. Sunny Thomas. He was more than a coach; he was a mentor, guide and father figure to generations of Indian shooters.

“His belief in our potential and his relentless dedication to the sport laid the foundation for India’s rise in international shooting. He played a big role in my early years, and I’ll always be grateful for his support and guidance. Rest in peace sir. Your impact is everlasting,” Bindra added.
