Colombo, Sri Lanka, April 6, 2020: The Sri Lanka National Olympic Committee along with athletes and coaches have wholeheartedly thrown their support behind the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace which is being celebrated worldwide on Monday, April 6.

“Let’s join the International Olympic Committee’s #BeActive campaign on the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace to show the unity and solidarity of the sporting community with the rest of the world,” urged the Sri Lanka NOC in a message on its Facebook page on Sunday.

“To support the campaign, take a 30-60 seconds video of your indoor activity during this pandemic times and post on your social media and/or inbox us to share with the world to #BeActive,” the Sri Lanka NOC added

This call was taken up by a number of the island nation's athletes posting videos on the NOC Facebook page. They included US-based women’s marathon runner Hiruni Wijayaratne exercising indoors at home in Colorado, archer Sajeev de Silva shooting at a target in his back garden in Colombo, weightlifter Chamari Warnakulasuriya lifting weights and karate head coach Mahdi Karimi going through a routine.

The annual celebration, which this year falls on April 6, is timely with the world fighting an unprecedented health crisis. This will be a day when the IOC and the whole Olympic Movement join the global effort to encourage everyone to be active and stay healthy and when populations are being asked to stay at home to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Olympic athletes around the world have shared creative ideas and tips on how to stay fit and healthy on the IOC social media channels.
