Male, Maldives, April 24, 2025: The President of Maldives Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed Maldives’ dedication to leveraging the transformative power of sports to foster unity, empowerment and equal opportunities.
In his message marking the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, the president reflected on this year’s theme, "Levelling the Playing Field: Sport for Social Inclusion". He underlined its alignment with the nation’s vision of fostering inclusivity in sports.
“We reaffirm our commitment to harnessing the power of sport as a force to achieve unity, empowerment and equal opportunities,” the President remarked. He underscored the significance of ensuring inclusion in sport “regardless of age, gender or race”, while also advocating for equal access to fitness and recreational facilities.
President Muizzu also highlighted initiatives poised to reshape the nation’s sporting landscape. “The plan of establishing fitness and recreation centres on every island over the next two years will ensure equal access to proper facilities for physical activities and well-being for all the locals.”
In addition, the President underscored the forthcoming 20-year National Sports Development Plan which aims to decentralise sports nationwide. “This ambitious plan will drive the decentralisation of sports, ensuring that talent enhancement, training programmes, and competitions are accessible nationwide,” he explained.
