Chennai, India, April 22, 2025: Olympic fencer CA Bhavani Devi has been named among the most inspiring women in India by Galatta Media.

The 31-year-old sabre specialist, who became the first Indian fencer to qualify for an Olympic Games, at Tokyo 2020, is still making an impact with her breakthrough achievements.

“Honored to be recognized by @galattadotcom among inspiring women,” she said, of the award from Galatta Media, India’s leading digital media company with 2.5 million Instagram followers.

“Grateful for the acknowledgement and thrilled to share the stage with talented awardees,” she added, followed by the hashtag #WomenEmpowerment.

A multiple international medallist, Bhavani Devi is the flag-bearer for fencing in India, having started competing at the age of 10.

The finest moment of her career came on July 26, 2021, when Bhavani Devi made history by becoming the first Indian fencer to compete at the Olympics.

Bhavani Devi made a winning start in Tokyo, pulling off a dominant 15-3 victory over Tunisia’s Nadia Ben Azizi in the women’s sabre individual round of 64. She then fell to eventual bronze medallist Manon Brunet of France in the round of 32 to end the competition ranked #31.

In the process, Bhavani Devi introduced India to the world of fencing – and still remains a national icon.
