Malaysia NOC President congratulates ‘all-rounder’ Kirsty Coventry

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, March 27, 2025: The President of the Olympic Council of Malaysia, Dr. Norza Zakaria, has described IOC President-elect Kirsty Coventry as the first “all-rounder” in the history of the Olympic Movement.

Dr. Norza, who is also OCA Vice President for Southeast Asia and President of the SEA Games Federation 2025-2027, said the election victory of Kirsty Coventry on March 20 was testament to her lifelong dedication to the Olympic Movement and unwavering commitment to the values of sport.

“The world has long admired you as a champion in the pool, an Olympic and world championship gold medallist who has inspired generations with your extraordinary achievements in swimming,” Dr Norza wrote in a letter of congratulations following her election to succeed IOC President Thomas Bach.

“Your journey from an elite athlete to the pinnacle of global sports leadership embodies the essence of perseverance, excellence and passion.

“While many will celebrate you as the first female and first African to hold the IOC Presidency, I personally recognize you as the only all-rounder IOC President, having served the Olympic Movement in multifaceted capacities - from competing as an Olympian to chairing the IOC Athletes’ Commission, serving in your National Olympic Committee and International Federation, contributing to the WADA, being a valued member of the IOC Executive Board as well as serving as the Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation of Zimbabwe.

“Your breadth of experience uniquely positions you to lead the Olympic Movement with vision and purpose.”

Dr Norza added that her manifesto reflected the spirit of the Olympic Motto of Faster, Higher, Stronger – Together.

“Just as athletes push their limits to achieve greatness, your leadership will elevate the Olympic Movement to new heights, strengthen its foundation and unite the global sporting community like never before.”
