Basra, Iraq, March 20, 2025: The President of the National Olympic Committee of Iraq, Dr. Aqeel Muften, will be leading the cheers when Iraq takes on Kuwait in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Basra on Thursday, March 20.
The Iraq NOC President is among the thousands of football fans who have descended on Basra for the crucial encounter against Kuwait in an Asian Zonal Group B clash.
“The Olympic Committee headed by Dr. Aqeel Muften continues an extensive campaign in Basra city to support and encourage the national football team, in preparation for its upcoming confrontations against Kuwait and Palestine,” the NOC posted on social media.
It added: “The streets of the city saw a special festive atmosphere with banners and national flags fluttering. This crowd momentum will uplift the morale of the players.”
Iraq currently sits in second place in Group B on 11 points behind Korea (14 points) followed by Jordan (9), Oman (6), Kuwait (4) and Palestine (3).
