Thimphu, Bhutan, March 4, 2025: His Royal Highness Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck, President of the Bhutan Olympic Committee and OCA Vice President, graced the launch of the Orientation and Capacity Development Programme for the pilot school project aimed at integrating a vibrant sports culture in schools on Monday, March 3.
The launch event was also attended by the Hon’ble Minister for Education and Skills Development, Lyonpo Yeezang D. Thapa, key officials from the Ministry, the Dzongdags from Haa and Paro, marking a significant step in the collaboration between the BOC and the Ministry of Education and Skills Development (MoESD).
The pilot project commenced with an orientation and capacity development workshop for District Education Officers, school principals, sports staff and representatives from National Sports Federations (NSFs). Participants delved into the MoESD-BOC Action and Implementation Plans, solidifying the framework established by the November MoU.
Three schools – Woochu Lower Secondary School, Khangkhu Middle Secondary School and Chundu Armed Forces Public School – will serve as pilot sites for one to two years, focusing on embedding comprehensive sports programmes and sports industry-related educational programmes, setting the stage for nationwide expansion.
With funding from Olympic Solidarity, the MoESD and BOC will jointly execute the project. Following the orientation, School Sports Instructors and Health & Physical Education teachers will receive specialized training facilitated by four federations, enhancing their ability to deliver quality sports education.
This transformative pilot programme aims to cultivate a generation of healthy, well-rounded individuals.
By integrating structured sports programmes into the curriculum, the project seeks to significantly enhance the physical and mental well-being of students.
Regular participation in sports will not only improve their fitness and reduce stress but also instill invaluable life skills such as teamwork, discipline, and resilience.
The pilot project, with its focus on training School Sports Instructors and collaborating with National Sports Federations, will strengthen the sports infrastructure and expertise within schools, leading to increased student engagement.
The lessons learned from this pilot will lay the groundwork for a nationwide expansion, ensuring that all Bhutanese students have access to quality sports education.
Ultimately, this initiative reflects Bhutan’s commitment to fostering a vibrant sports culture, aligning with the national vision of promoting youth development and creating a healthier, more active society.
