New Delhi, India, March 2, 2025: The President of the Indian Olympic Association, PT Usha, has proposed setting a high standard for the National Games.

She has recommended that only sports disciplines included in the Olympic Games, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games be part of future National Games so as to set a certain competitive standard.

IOA President Usha said her proposal would be tabled at the next General Assembly of the IOA.

The recently-concluded 38th National Games in Uttarakhand – India’s own multi-sports event inspired by the Olympics – saw athletes from 28 states, eight Union Territories and Services Sports Control Board compete for medals in 34 different sports.

Among these sports were two traditional arts, yoga and mallakhamb – a martial arts training.

The IOA said in a statement: “The proposal recommends that only sports disciplines included in the upcoming Olympic Games, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games be considered for inclusion.

“This underscores the IOA’s commitment to aligning the National Games with international standards, ensuring that it continues to serve as a premier platform for preparing athletes to excel on the global stage while maintaining its historical significance and spirit.”

Usha felt that several regional sports should be part of the National Games as demonstration sports and should not be upgraded to medal sport.

“The IOA recognises the value of these sports but emphasises the need to maintain a clear distinction between demonstration and medal sports.”
