Hong Kong, China, February 14, 2025: The Harbin 2025 Asian Winter Games came to an end on Friday, February 14. The Hong Kong, China delegation concluded the AWG with the best ever results in AWG, achieving a number of breakthroughs.
This AWG marked Team Hong Kong, China’s debuts in the curling and alpine skiing events. The Men’s Curling Team overcame one hurdle after another to the bronze medal match. Despite losing the game to the National Team, the Men’s Team ranked fourth in the games, reaching new heights for Team HKG, as the mixed doubles duos finished fifth.
Team HKG’s alpine skiing athlete ranked 10th out of 58 contestants, the highest ranking that Hong Kong has achieved in this discipline in international multi-sports games.
The Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey Teams demonstrated their strong spirits. The Men’s Team advanced to the quarterfinal for the first time, marking an important milestone for the ice hockey squad at AWG.
On the other hand, short track speed skating athletes and figure skating athletes alike ranked among the first 15, with the short trackers making their way to the finals.
Mr. Kenneth Fok, Vice President of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC) and Chef de Mission of the Hong Kong, China Delegation to AWG, said: “While winter sports are not very popular in Hong Kong, our athletes have achieved breakthroughs in facing tough competitions against strong rivals during their journey at this AWG. They have made history for this ‘snowless city’ and we take pride in their performances.”
Mr. Fok added: “Hong Kong has been gaining prominence on the world stage in winter sports. With the valuable experience gained by competing with top players in the games, our athletes will make significant progress in their levels.
“I am hopeful that more young winter sports enthusiasts will join the team, contributing to a sustainable and promising development in the city’s ice and snow sports. Our winter athletes will continue to excel on global stage.”
Mr. Fok commended the coaching and training teams, medical officers and technical staff for their support and contributions to the good performances of athletes. He paid tribute to the host city Harbin for its efforts made for hosting the games, as well as the Organizing Committee and nearly 6 000 volunteers for their hospitality, adding that the delegation was impressed by the unique appeal of this ice and snow city.
In particular, Mr. Fok expressed his gratitude to Mr. John Lee, Chief Executive, Miss Rosanna Law, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, and other government officials, for showing their support to athletes on the field. In addition, he said he was grateful for the spectators rooting for Team HKG at the games, who made Hong Kong athletes feel at home and compete in high spirits.
The closing ceremony will be held at the Harbin International Conference, Exhibition and Sports Centre tonight. Martin Yan (Curling) will carry the flag for the Hong Kong, China Delegation at the ceremony.
Mr. Fok said: “Curling is a tactical sport and Team HKG is a relatively newcomer. Despite making their debuts in international multi-sports games, curling athletes have made their presence felt with historic achievements. It is truly a testament to the competency of Hong Kong athletes. SF&OC will continue to play a significant role in the development of winter sports in Hong Kong.”
