Hanoi, Vietnam, January 24, 2024: Vietnam will be competing in the Asian Winter Games for only the second time in history at Harbin, China next month.

Having made their debut at Sapporo, Japan in 2017, the tropical southeast Asian country will be represented by a lone athlete in Harbin – Truong Lap Duong, who will compete in short track speed skating.

Lap, 20, learned his trade in roller sports, particularly inline speed skating, but now will continue his sports journey on the ice in the hurly burly of short track.

“Lap has been practising roller skating and ice skating professionally since 2020 and is currently training in Ho Chi Minh City,” says the Secretary General of the Vietnam Olympic Committee, Manh Van Tran.

“Lap has won several medals in roller sports over the last three years at a variety of distances and age levels, including youth and senior. He has also competed at international roller sports events in Malaysia and China.”

The VOC official adds: “Lap is a very hardworking athlete with a high sense of responsibility and discipline. He has made a breakthrough and enjoyed some success recently.

“Lap's strengths are in the short and medium distances, up to 1000 metres, and he has the ability to adapt and learn very quickly in all circumstances.

“He is still very young, but he has invested a lot of time in training and in competition so he will be able to compete in the upcoming Asian Winter Games.”

Vietnam will be sending a three-strong delegation to Harbin, comprised of the head of delegation, Lap and his coach. Lap will compete in the men’s 500m, 1000m and 1500m short track races.
