Jerusalem, Palestine, January 16, 2025: The Palestine Olympic Committee has announced that karate champion Maryam Basharat is in line to collect a major award.
The POC media department reports that the Arab Union for Sports Culture will honour Maryam during an awards ceremony in Doha, Qatar on February 2.
“During the ceremony, Basharat will receive the Arab Culture Award for Promising Athlete of the Year 2024 in celebration of her brilliant career over the past year,” the POC said.
Last October, Basharat won the gold medal in the +61kg category in the World Karate Federation’s 13th World Junior, Cadet and Under 21 Championships in Venice, Italy, where she recorded five consecutive victories.
She also won the gold medal at the Asian Youth Karate Championships in Manila last September.
This was preceded in July by Basharat winning the gold medal at the World Karate 1 Youth League in Spain with six consecutive matches.
During June of the same year, Basharat won the bronze medal in the World League on the back of six victories during the tournament.
Basharat concluded the year by winning the gold medal at the Arab Championship in Jordan last December.
Born in the occupied West Bank town of Nablus, the young woman hails from a karate-loving family that established its own karate institution called Al-Aqsa Karate Academy, the Palestine Chronicle reports.
