Manila, Philippines, January 5, 2025: The result was never in doubt – but the Philippine Sportswriters Association has confirmed that Paris Olympic Games hero Carlos Yulo has won the PSA 2024 Athlete of the Year Award.
The 24-year-old gymnast became the first Filipino athlete to win two gold medals at the Olympic Games – in men’s floor exercise and vault.
His efforts built on the legacy of Hidilyn Diaz, who earned the Philippines’ historic first gold medal in the Olympics with weightlifting gold at Tokyo 2020.
Yulo’s historic accomplishment came during the country’s centennial participation in the Summer Games dating back to 1924, underscoring its significance.
The award will be presented at the PSA Awards Night on January 27, 2025, at the Manila Hotel.
This honour makes Yulo the first gymnast to receive the title since Pia Adelle Reyes in 1997, a testament to his exceptional performance.
PSA President Nelson Beltran of The Philippine Star praised Yulo’s achievements, stating: “From a great Olympic performance to an even greater Olympic show, Carlos Yulo’s monumental accomplishment deserves the highest accolades.”
Yulo’s remarkable journey continues to inspire the nation, a true symbol of Filipino excellence and determination.
