Former POC Secretary-General Atty. Edwin Gastanes passes away

Manila, Philippines, January 2, 2025: The sports family in the Philippines is mourning the passing of Atty. Edwin Gastanes.

 

Gastanes was a former Secretary-General of the Philippine Football Federation and Philippine Olympic Committee. The attorney was 66 years old when he passed away on December 24, 2024.

 

The PFF said in a statement: “It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the passing of Atty. Edwin Gastanes, the former General Secretary of the Philippine Football Federation. We are grateful for his efforts that made a lasting impact on Philippine football.

 

“His legacy will forever be remembered in the hearts of those who had the privilege of working alongside him.”

 

Under the leadership of former PFF President Mariano “Nonong” Araneta Jr., Atty Gastanes served from 2013 until 2023 and gave a hand in helping Philippine football reach new heights.

 

Among the feats that the country earned include the historic campaign of the Philippine women’s national team in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and the Philippine men’s national team’s stint in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup.

 

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to his family, friends and everyone whose lives he touched through his service to football. Rest in peace, Atty. Gastanes. Your contributions will never be forgotten,” added the PFF.

 

The Philippine Sports Commission also paid tribute to the former POC Secretary-General.
