Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, December 10, 2024: A total of 119 participants from 36 Asian National Olympic Committees will take part in the Olympic Council of Asia-Jiu-Jitsu Asian Union development camp for coaches and referees in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
This inaugural camp for jiu-jitsu will be held at the Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Academy from December 11-15.
The OCA had invited all 45 Asian NOCs to send two coaches (one male and one female) and two referees (one male and one female) for the first ever development programme in jiu-jitsu. In total, 123 participants will participate in the five-day camp.
“The Olympic Council of Asia aims to foster the growth and development of sport throughout Asia by empowering NOCs to elevate their standards of performance and promote the spirit of fair play,” noted Wissam Trkmani, OCA’s Director of Development and NOC Relations.
“Central to this vision is the advancement of coaches and referees, who play a pivotal role in raising the sporting performance of athletes and supporting sustainable growth in their respective communities,” Mr. Trkmani continued.
This ambitious scheme by the OCA to create a one-stop shop for coaches and referees in different sports to learn modern coaching techniques and rule updates began in Kuwait in March, 2022, with 12 West Asian NOCs sending 520 coaches and referees in nine sports.
Since then similar development camps have been held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for the other four OCA zones – Central Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia and East Asia - in a number of sports.
The primary objectives of the jiu-jitsu development camp in Abu Dhabi are:
· Enhance the skill sets of coaches and referees across Asia, providing certification to ensure standardised and professional development.
· Improving sporting results in Asia by certifying proficient coaches and referees.
· Aid NOCs and their associated national federations in implementing strategies that enhance their coaching and officiating environments.
· Provide accessible education and training opportunities to coaches who may otherwise lack access to such initiatives,
· Align the project with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly focusing on quality education and reduced inequalities.
The workshop will comprise both theoretical and practical sessions, addressing the latest updates in rules, regulations, and current techniques. Each programme is meticulously designed with the Asian and International Federation.
The programme will also dedicate sessions on key topics relevant to ‘Guarding the Asian Games’, such as Safeguarding, Prevention of Manipulation of Competition, Olympic Values Education and Anti-Doping.
Official certificates will be handed to all participants at the end of the development camp.
