New Delhi, India, March 24, 2020: Hockey, athletics and weightlifting are the only three sports in India whose athletes are still in training camps for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Indian Olympic Association President Narinder Batra stated on Monday.

“The health and safety of athletes is of prime concern of the Indian Olympic Association and of the Union Sports Ministry and there will be no compromise in this regard. As of now, hockey men and women, athletics and weightlifting athletes are in their training camps while other probable athletes are mostly back home,” Batra said in a statement.

His statement came a day after Canada created a flutter by becoming the first nation to pull out of the Olympics due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“All 206 NOCs had a video call with the IOC President last week to discus COVID-19 and the Olympics. All NOCs have to get back to the IOC this week on their preparations and the health of athletes in their respective countries,” Batra said.

“I am personally in touch on regular and continuous basis with the Union Ministry of Sports, Sports Authority of India, IOC, National Sports Federations in India, with athletes through their federations and all stakeholders regarding the 2020 Olympics and preparations for the Games,” Batra added.
