Singapore, December 5, 2024: Singapore sports legend Tan Howe Liang passed away on Tuesday, December 3. He was 91.

Tan won Singapore’s first Olympic medal – a silver in weightlifting at Rome 1960 – and was described by the Singapore National Olympic Council as a “sportsman born ahead of his time” in that Singapore was more focused on economic progress than chasing sporting glory at that time.

“Howe Liang’s achievement has inspired many generations of Singaporeans,” said Singapore NOC President Ms Grace Fu.

“His achievement in Rome goes to show what one can achieve if one simply devotes himself to it. He also exemplifies the value of a true Olympian athlete through his humility and kindness.”

SNOC Vice President Mark Chay, who is in Bangkok to attend the OCA Safeguarding Workshop, added: “Today, Singapore bids farewell to a true legend, Mr Tan Howe Liang - our nation’s first Olympic medallist.

“His passing marks the loss of an extraordinary individual whose achievements and character have left an indelible mark on Singapore’s sporting history.

“Thank you, Mr Tan, for showing us what resilience and hard work truly mean. You paved the way for Singaporean athletes and gave us a dream to believe in.  For the longest time, you stood as the lone bright star in our Olympic sporting history, and your legacy will forever inspire us to aim higher.”

The SNOC posted: “Rest in peace, Mr Tan Howe Liang. Your remarkable legacy will forever inspire us. Thank you for your contributions to sports and our nation. You will be deeply missed.”
