HRH Prince Jigyel attends ground-breaking ceremony for cricket-shooting centre in Bhutan

Thimphu, Bhutan, December 4, 2024: Bhutan has taken a monumental step in its sports development with the ground-breaking of the Rama Centre of Excellence for cricket and shooting.

The President of Bhutan Olympic Committee, HRH Prince Jigyel Wangchuck, graced the ceremony. Also in attendance was the Prime Minister of Bhutan, Hon. Lyonchen Tshering Tobgay, the Ambassador of India to Bhutan, HE Shri Sudhakar Dalela, and other government ministers and dignitaries.

The Rama Centre of Excellence is envisaged as a transformative hub for cricket and shooting, offering facilities to international standards. Spanning 39 acres, the complex will feature cricket grounds, shooting ranges, athlete accommodation and supporting amenities such as a gymnasium and medical services.

Funded under the Bhutan-India Friendship Project, with a budget of Nu 667 million (US$7,873,428), the centre represents a cornerstone of bilateral ties and aims to position Bhutan as a regional hub in these sports.

The first phase of development, set for completion within three to four years, will focus on core sports infrastructure, with subsequent phases enhancing the centre's capacity and services.

Prince Jigyel and Ambassador Dalela unveiled a commemorative plaque to mark the official commencement of the project.
