Doha, Qatar, December 2, 2024: The Qatar Olympic Committee hosted the Sports Excellence Awards 2024 under the patronage of QOC President HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani.
The event, which took place at the Qatar National Convention Centre, was also attended by HE Mohammed bin Yousef Al Mana, QOC First Vice President; HE Dr. Thani bin Abdulrahman Al Kuwari, QOC Second Vice President and OCA Vice President; and HE Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain, QOC Secretary General, as well as the presidents of Qatar’s sports federations and other dignitaries.
QOC Secretary General Al Buenain said: “It is truly an honour once again to host this annual celebration, which has become a valued tradition for honouring Qatari champions and athletes with outstanding achievements.
"It is also important to honour our partners and sponsors from government and private sectors who play a vital role in supporting sports and the Olympic movement in our country.”
Reflecting on the accomplishments of the past season, Al Buenain noted: “This season has been extraordinary for Qatari sports. Our participation in the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics saw our athletes continuing their success on the international stage.
"Notably our world champion Mutaz Barshim earned a bronze medal in the high jump, becoming the first athlete to win four Olympic medals in this event.
“In addition, the season featured key organisational and institutional milestones, including Doha hosting the World Aquatics Championships and the Congress of the International Gymnastics Federation, further solidifying Qatar’s reputation as a leading host of major sporting events.
"Moreover, distinguished sports figures secured prominent international and regional positions, reaffirming Qatar’s esteemed standing and leadership in the global sports arena.”
Sheikh Joaan presented the awards. High jumper Mutaz Barshim was named Male Athlete of the Season, while shooting’s Amal Mohammed Mahmoud was awarded the Female Athlete of the Season.
The Qatar Handball Association was honoured with the Golden Federation Award for Team Sports, while the Qatar Athletics Federation won the Golden Federation Award for Individual Sports. The Men’s Team of the Season Award went to Qatar’s Beach Volleyball Team.
