Nepal NOC educates its athletes on COVID-19

Kathmandu, Nepal, March 23, 2020: The Nepal Olympic Committee has carried out an awareness seminar on COVID-19 with expert doctors explaining about the coronavirus and prevention measures.

The seminar, which was held at Nepal NOC headquarters at Satdobato, Lalitpur on March 20, was inaugurated by NOC President and Member of Parliament Hon. Jeevan Ram Shrestha.

The main speakers were Dr. Baburam Marashini, former director of Epidemiology and Disease Control Division, Department of Health Services on the coronavirus, and Dr. Saroj Krishna Shrestha, chairperson of Medical Commission of NOC.

A total of 22 participants including the wild card applicants from Nepal for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics attended.

As the coronavirus was having a direct impact on athletes and their training programmes, the seminar busted myths about COVID-19 and highlighted different prevention measures athletes and coaches could take.

President Shrestha revealed that the NOC has formed a doctors panel to educate athletes on proper usage of medicines so as to prevent doping issues, and also to help the athletes if they needed treatment.

The panel includes Dr. Saroj Shrestha (NOC), Prof. Nabeesh Man Singh Pradhan (Patan Hospital), Dr. Raju Dangol (National Sports Council), Dr. Hement Chand (Epidemiology) and Dr. Punam Pathak (Nepal Police).

Also present at the seminar were NOC Vice President Chaturanandra Raj Baidhya and NOC Secretary General Nilendra Raj Shrestha.
