Tashkent, Uzbekistan, November 27, 2024: The President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, was elected as head of the country's National Olympic Committee at the 41stGeneral Assembly of the NOC on Monday, November 25.
The General Assembly was attended by Prime Minister Abdulla Aripov, presidential adviser Odil Abdurakhmanov, Sports Minister Adkham Ikramov, Olympic Council of Asia Vice President Otabek Umarov and other dignitaries and delegates.
NOC Secretary General Oybek Kasimov, who was re-elected to the position, emphasised that, per the NOC’s charter, the NOC leadership will now be restructured every Olympic cycle.
The position of NOC President was vacant since Rustam Shaabdurakhmanov left the post in February 2022.
The NOC in a statement said: “Considering the critical need for thorough preparation for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, the request from the Olympic community, athletes and coaches, Prime Minister Abdulla Aripov proposed the candidacy of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The delegates unanimously approved the nomination, electing Shavkat Mirziyoyev as the NOC President.”
OCA vice president Otabek Umarov, who is the president’s son-in-law, was elected as first vice president of the NOC and Oybek Kasimov was re-elected as secretary general and Sherzod Tashmatov as deputy president.
