OCA development programme attracts over 100 coaches and referees to Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, November 24, 2024: The Olympic Council of Asia will hold the third stage of the continent-wide OCA Development Programme for Coaches and Referees in Kuala Lumpur from November 25-29.

The five-day camp will focus on four sports – archery, badminton, table tennis and swimming – and has attracted 111 coaches and referees from 19 National Olympic Committees in Southeast Asia and East Asia.

The OCA conducted the first stage of its development programme for coaches and referees from West Asia in Kuwait in March and June 2022 and the second stage for coaches and referees from Central Asia and South Asia in Uzbekistan in November 2022. This third stage will complete the programme for the five zones of the OCA.

“The Olympic Council of Asia is very happy to return to Malaysia to conduct the third stage of our development programme for coaches and referees from Southeast Asia and East Asia,” said the OCA’s Director of Development and NOC Relations, Wissam Trkmani.

“The first two stages, held in Kuwait and Uzbekistan, proved to be very beneficial and rewarding for the coaches and referees in terms of updating the participants on the latest global trends and training methods under the eye of experienced local and international instructors.

“We can assure our coaches and referees from East Asia and Southeast Asia that a lively and interesting week awaits them here in Kuala Lumpur.

“The OCA would like to thank the Olympic Council of Malaysia, especially the esteemed President, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri (Dr.) Mohamad Norza Zakaria, and the respective International Federations and Asian Federations for their support in hosting this development programme.”

As well as the practical and theoretical sessions in coaching and refereeing, the camp also includes presentations from experts in a series of fields that are becoming increasingly important in the modern-day Olympic movement. These include Olympic values, safeguarding, the prevention of competition manipulation and anti-doping.

Mr. Trkmani added: “The OCA feels that this development programme presents an ideal opportunity to brief our coaches and referees on some key issues in the Olympic movement. The aim is that they will return to their home country and put into practice what they have learned here for the betterment of their sport and their athletes in all aspects.”
