Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, November 17, 2024: The Olympic Council of Malysia expresses its deepest condolences to the family of Dato’ Yeoh Choo Hock, who passed away peacefully on Friday, November 15. He was 80 years old.
Dato’ Yeoh was very prominent in basketball. He served as one of the coaches for the national men’s and women’s basketball teams from 1975 to 1989. His highest achievement as a national coach was leading the men’s team to the gold medal at the 15th SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur in 1989.
He first took on the role of Technical Assistant to the Secretary General of the Asian Basketball Confederation, now known as FIBA Asia, from 1983 to 1990. From 1990 onward, his basketball career became a full-time commitment, as he was appointed or elected to serve the basketball community at all levels, nationally, regionally, continentally and globally.
“On behalf of the OCM, we deeply mourn the passing of Dato’ Yeoh Choo Hock, a remarkable individual who made invaluable contributions to the development of basketball in Malaysia,” said the OCM President, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri (Dr.) Mohamad Norza Zakaria.
“I was truly humbled to have the opportunity to honour him with the MABA Lifetime Achievement Award during the Annual Dinner of the MABA held on 27 January 2024 at The Westin Kuala Lumpur.
“The contributions of Dato’ Yeoh Choo Hock extended far beyond basketball, and his dedication to the Olympic Movement in Malaysia was immense.
“In recognition of his extensive contribution to basketball and his significant influence on the growth of the Olympic Movement in Malaysia, Dato’ Yeoh Choo Hock was inducted into the OCM Hall of Fame in 2015.”
