Maldivian government pledges to build sports facilities for all national sports

Male, Maldives, October 29, 2024: The Government of Maldives intends to build a dedicated sports facility for each national sport within the next five years, according to the Minister of Sport, Fitness and Recreation, Abdulla Rafiu.

Speaking at the Maldives Sports Awards 2024, Minister Rafiu said: “The government aims to establish a special sports facility for every national sport within the next five years, addressing one of the primary complaints from athletes and associations.”

To support the development of sports, a Memorandum of Understanding was recently signed with Saudi Arabia.

Additionally, the government is seeking assistance from China, India, Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates and other countries on various sports-related initiatives.

Minister Rafiu also noted that the government had invested US$14.6 million in sports development over the past year.
