New Delhi, India, October 24, 2024: Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey has expressed disappointment after hockey was excluded from the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

In what would be a blow to India’s medal chances, cricket, hockey, badminton and wrestling are among sports dropped from the programme for the 2026 Glasgow Games.

Speaking to news agency ANI, Tirkey said that dropping these sports would affect the future of young players in India.

“Six sports have been dropped from the upcoming Commonwealth Games which will be held in Scotland. It is being said that this is because of the financial burden and lack of infrastructure. It is sad for the future of the young players in India. The message will not be right for the young athletes,” Tirkey said.

India won the silver medal in men's hockey at the 2022 Birmingham Games.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games will feature only 10 sports – athletics, swimming, 3x3 basketball, track cycling, weightlifting, lawn bowls, artistic gymnastics, netball, boxing and judo.
