Baghdad, Iraq, October 24, 2024: The National Olympic Committee of Iraq has met with the Ministry of Immigration and Refugees in a bid to launch a sports programme for displaced communities.
Ms. Ishtar Ali Kamel, advisor on International Relations to the President of the Iraq Olympic Committee, met with Mrs. Nour Mohammed Abdul-Jabbar, Director of the Office of the Minister of Immigration and Refugees, on Tuesday, October 22 to explore a strategic partnership.
During the meeting it was decided to create tailored sports programmes for displaced individuals, focusing on providing physical and mental health benefits, promoting community engagement and providing a sense of stability, especially for young people.
Ms. Ishtar Kamel said the initiative aimed to encourage active participation in sport among displaced youth, as well as identifying and nurturing talent that can represent Iraq at national and international levels.
The Iraq NOC believes such a programme will be an important step for many people who have faced challenges beyond their will, help them regain confidence and find a sense of belonging through sport.
On her part, Mrs. Nour Abdul-Jabbar expressed “great interest in moving forward in the partnership to help displaced communities.”
Both parties have agreed to develop a comprehensive framework for sports programmes that will be launched in the near future.
