Phnom Penh, Cambodia, September 29, 2024: Vath Chamroeun, Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia, has been honoured by the World Olympians Association.
Vath, who represented Cambodia in men’s freestyle wrestling (featherweight, 62kg) at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, has received a certificate of recognition by the WOA.
The certificate reads: “In recognition of your achievement as an Olympian you are granted use of the post-nominal letters OLY to signify your ongoing role in society as an Olympian, living and promoting the Olympic values.”
Vath said that he was humbled to receive such recognition from an international sports organisation. “This honour is not just for me, but for the whole Cambodian nation,” Vath said.
Before becoming a professional athlete, HE Vath Chamroeun started out as a martial arts trainer in a variety of martial arts, such as karate and wrestling, and competed in the 1996 Olympics as well as other major international competitions.
NOC Cambodia noted: “He has been involved in Cambodian sports since childhood. His Excellency has always worked hard to develop himself from an athlete to become an expert in sports activities, Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia, Secretary General of the National Organising Committee of the 32nd Southeast Asian Games 2023 (CAMSOC), some national sports federations and has a role in the government as the current Secretary of State of the Ministry of Tourism.”
