ANOC advocates more Olympic qualifying places through continental games

ANOC advocates more Olympic qualifying places through continental games

New Delhi, India, September 8, 2024: The Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) believes that more qualification places for the Olympic Games through continental games is the way forward.

In her annual report to the OCA General Assembly on Sunday, ANOC Secretary General Gunilla Lindberg said that ANOC was advocating for increased qualification quotas via continental games through the sports calendar working group.

The Asian Games in Hangzhou, China last year provided a qualifying pathway to Paris 2024 for nine sports, notably boxing, hockey, breaking and modern pentathlon.

But clearly ANOC feels that the continental games for the five continental associations can provide more quota places on the road to the next Olympic Games, especially if the continental games are held one year before the Olympics.

Mrs. Lindberg also said that ANOC had an agreement with the IOC to review each sports qualification system (quota distribution).

The ANOC report described Paris 2024 overall as “fantastic”, and highlighted the support NOCs received through the ANOC Photo Project for smaller NOCs, including 12 from Asia, and the ANOC.TV Programme which attracted 50 NOCs, including 10 from Asia.

She also pointed out that Olympic Solidarity’s contribution to the ANOC has been cut from USD 13 million in 2013 to USD 2.5 million per year following the OS meeting on July 19, 2024 in Paris. This means that ANOC will cover one room and one economy class flight ticket per NOC for the ANOC GA in Cascais, Portugal from October 30 to November 1, 2024.

The ANOC Awards 2024 in nine categories and gala dinner will be held on October 30, with the main focus on outstanding performances at Paris 2024.

ANOC also announced that, following a decision by the ANOC Executive Council, Indonesia has to pay back their debts to ANOC before discussion can start about any future beach games. This follows the sudden cancellation of the second Asian Beach Games, due to be held in Bali, in August 2023.
