Hangzhou Asian Games presents final report to OCA General Assembly

New Delhi, India, September 8, 2024: The organising committee of the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China presented a final report to the 44th OCA General Assembly in New Delhi on Sunday.

The report was broken down into four sections:

1: Breakthroughs achieved by the Hangzhou Asian Games

2: Efforts made in Games preparation and organisation

3: Asian Games makes Hangzhou a better city

4: Post-Games endeavours

 

1: Breakthroughs achieved by the Hangzhou Asian Games:

*The largest ever in terms of participation, with 17,541 participants from the OCA’s 45 countries and regions. This figure comprised 11,830 athletes and 5,711 team officials.

*Hong Kong China, Japan, Singapore and Mongolia all sent their largest delegations in the history of the Asian Games.

*40 sports, 61 disciplines and 481 events, with breaking and esports making their Asian Games debut.

*15 world records, 37 Asian records and 170 Asian Games records. 27 NOCs won at least one gold medal, and 41 of the 45 NOCs won at least one medal – the highest number ever.

*Most extensive geographical coverage with 54 competition venues and 30 independent training venues. The athletes were accommodated in one main Asian Games Village in Hangzhou and five satellite villages in Zhejiang province.

*Highest number of spectators, with over 3.7 million – an average of 90 per cent capacity.

 

2: Efforts made in Games preparation and organisation:

*Swift and efficient adaptation following the one-year postponement due to the pandemic.

*Dedicated teams for 41 competition venues (clusters), 21 independent training venues (clusters), 42 non-competition venues.

*Smooth and seamless operation of 5,607 competitions.

*Asian Games Fun Run and Asian Games Ten Cities Tour involved 40 cities worldwide. 10,000 events were held in communities, schools and enterprises.

*200 million people took part in the online torch relay, and the physical torch relay was watched by 3 million spectators.

*Staff and over 28,000 volunteers worked on the Asian Games.

*3,584 vehicles operated 38,000 journeys with 100% punctuality rate.

*Meals were served for 3.1 million meal times.

 

3: Asian Games makes Hangzhou a better city

*Metro system now extends to 516 km.

*Accessibility upgrades to 140,000 facilities, 75 roads, 3,000 km of paving and 1,600 public toilets.

*All competition venues were open to the public before the Asian Games.

 

4: Post-Games endeavours

*Hangzhou Asian Games Museum located in the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Stadium.

*Disposal of assets and equipment: 13,000 pieces of equipment have been donated to Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee and the National Olympic Committee of Senegal.

*The future of 42 venues has been clearly outlined: 19 by enterprises, 10 by government, eight by universities and schools and five for alternative uses. The newly established Hangzhou Sports Group will lead the development.

 

The report was presented by Hangzhou Municipal Government Deputy Mayor Chen Weiqiang.

 

OCA Acting President Raja Randhir Singh described Hangzhou as an “amazing” Asian Games and said it would be very difficult to follow.
