Iraqi PM assures NOC president of new HQ and financial support

Baghdad, Iraq, August 28, 2024: The Prime Minister of the Republic of Iraq, Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani, received the President of the Iraq National Olympic Committee, Dr. Aqeel Muftin, in his offices in Baghdad on Monday, August 26.

 

The NOC President briefed the Iraqi Prime Minister on plans to achieve Olympic medals at LA28 and Brisbane 2032, and also submitted proposals for the development of sport in the country.

 

“The Iraqi Prime Minister has assured his fullest support to promote national Olympic work and has agreed to launch the operational financial grants for National Sports Associations with this in mind,” the NOC said in a statement.

 

It added that the Iraqi government had assured the NOC they would be given 75 acres of land in a prominent vicinity in the capital where a new NOC Headquarters would be built which will also house national federations and associations, as well as an Olympic Academy.  

 

During the meeting, the Iraqi PM had noted: “The government will continue to provide full support to sport, including the Olympic Champion Project which was launched recently.”

 

NOC President Dr. Muftin thanked the Iraqi PM for taking great interest in sport and the support given to the NOC.
