Baghdad, Iraq, August 19, 2024: The President of the Iraq National Olympic Committee, Dr. Aqeel Muftin, met Spanish sports expert Ignasi Fabregas at the NOC headquarters in Baghdad on Sunday, August 18.

Discussions centred on putting in place a road map for Iraqi athletes to win medals at the Los Angeles 2028 and Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games.

Fabregas specialises in identifying young sporting talent and his goal, according to the Iraq NOC President, is to “put in place a process of implementing the vision of the NOC to achieve Olympic medals for Iraq at LA28 and Brisbane 2032.”

Iraq participated in five sports – athletics, football, judo, swimming and weightlifting – at the Paris 2024 Olympics but returned home empty-handed without winning a medal.

Iraq NOC Secretary General Haitham Abdul Hameed, who was also present at the meeting, accompanied Fabregas on preliminary visits to the national federations of archery and cycling.

“The Spanish expert will be visiting all Olympic associations in the country and submitting his reports to the NOC. We will look at how the NOC can help support young sporting talent with an eye on winning medals at the next two Olympic Games,” Dr. Muftin said.
