Paris, France, August 4, 2024: Chinese Taipei’s Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Lin defended their men’s doubles badminton title with a stunning victory over China’s Wang Chang and Liang Weikeng at La Chapelle Arena in Paris on Sunday, August 4.

The unseeded CTOC representatives beat the Chinese top seeds 21-17, 18-21, 21-19 in 76 minutes to claim another famous gold medal.

The Chinese Taipei duo had won every match in Paris on their way to gold, four in the group and three in the knockout rounds, and Lee commented: "Last time in Tokyo not a lot of people knew us but this time a lot of people can recognise us.

“In the past three years we didn’t play that well. Before we came to Paris, we’ve heard some voices that they don’t want us to represent Chinese Taipei. I’m happy that with such tough competition – and we were in the toughest group, D - we still managed to win the gold medal. I’m very happy that our efforts were seen by everyone."

Talking about the support they received in the arena, Lee added: "Behind every outstanding athlete, there is the support of family members. Because of the support of family members, we are stronger, more powerful. My dad travelled to Paris to see me play. I am very happy that he is here and because he is here I could play better."

Lee said he thought the time was right to retire.

"Last time after Tokyo I didn’t think about retiring but this time I am. So, this time it has a different meaning and that’s why I kissed the court after competition, to bid a proper farewell."

Wang said it was a tough final.

"They gave us a lot of pressure and it was quite challenging. In the third set we almost exhausted our strength but we received a lot of support and we’re very happy we finally achieved the victory."
