Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, March 11, 2020: The Badminton World Federation announced on Wednesday that the Yonex-Sunrise India Open 2020 to be staged in New Delhi from March 24-29 will go ahead as planned.
Enhanced precautionary measures will be in place to ensure the welfare and safety of players, their entourage and officials, the BWF said in a statement.
This includes the likelihood of the tournament being staged behind closed doors without spectators.
The BWF and Badminton Association of India confirmed the decision after the BAI consulted experts over the past few days regarding advisories issued by health authorities in India.
BWF accepts that all relevant health, safety and logistical risks have been considered in this process.
The tournament is a Super 500 event on the HSBC BWF World Tour and falls within the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games qualifying period.
BWF is continuing to monitor all official updates on COVID-19 (Coronavirus) with no change to the intention to stage other HSBC BWF World Tour or BWF-sanctioned tournaments at this time.
With particular reference to Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games qualification, BWF is not at this time planning to make any adjustments to the regulations related to the Olympic qualification period.
The BWF has cancelled or postponed several events in recent weeks, including tour stops in China and Vietnam.
