Paris, France, July 31, 2024: After an eight-year wait, DPR Korea diver Kim Mi Rae finally has an Olympic medal.

After finishing fourth in the women’s 10m synchronized platform competition at Rio 2016, Kim and partner Jo Jin Mi finished second in the same event at Paris 2024 on Wednesday to claim the silver medal behind China.

It was DPR Korea’s second silver in two days after a runners-up finish in mixed double table tennis on Tuesday - again behind China.

“When I could not win a medal at the Rio Olympics, I was really sad,” said Kim, 23. “We did vigorous training and we did our best but we could not get the result.

“We trained a lot in North Korea for this Olympic Games and we really did our best to win that medal. Although we did not get the gold, we won the silver and I am very happy with that.”

Her partner Jo, 19, was competing in her first Olympic Games – DPR Korea did not attend Tokyo 2020 due to covid concerns – and said her next goal would be the gold medal.
