Iraq NOC President proud of victory over Ukraine and asks for more

Paris, France, July 25, 2024: The President of the National Olympic Committee of Iraq, Dr. Aqeel Muften, has congratulated the Iraqi people in general and the sports community in particular following Iraq’s 2-1 victory over Ukraine in the men’s football tournament on Wednesday.

 

Muften said: “We are proud of what the Lions of Ravdin performed in their first match against the Ukrainian national team. 

 

“Our team deserved to win, both by their performance and also in the result, for the distinctive style they displayed on the pitch, especially in the second half of the match.”

 

The NOC President urged his players to give more in the upcoming matches, to forget about this victory over Ukraine and to focus on the next game against Argentina.

 

He also renewed his promise to provide all possible support to the football team and all the athletes participating in the Olympic Games being held in Paris.

 

In their Group B opener, Iraq fell behind to Ukraine (Valentyn Rubchynskyi, 53 minutes) but fought back to win 2-1 with goals from Aymen Hussein (penalty, 56 minutes) and Ali Jasim (75 minutes).

 

Morocco beat Argentina 2-1 in the other Group B game which ended in chaotic manner and in an empty stadium.
