Iraqi football team arrives in Lyon ahead of Paris 2024 opener against Ukraine

Paris, France, July 20, 2024: The Iraq football team has arrived in France to complete their preparations for their opening Olympic Games Paris 2024 Group B game against Ukraine at Lyon on Wednesday, July 24 (7pm). The Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee of Iraq, Haitham Abdulhameed, and finance officer Abdul Elah received the delegation at Lyon Airport on Friday. Mr. Haitham conveyed the greetings of the President of the Olympic Committee, Dr. Aqeel Muften, and members of the Executive Office to the delegation of the Olympic football team. Iraq NOC, in cooperation with the Football Federation, has provided all the needs for the Olympic team to give a good account of themselves at the Olympic Games and to achieve positive results in future competitions. In reply, the team – under Iraqi head coach Radih Shenaishil – pledged to give their best to bring joy to the Iraqi people. The men’s football tournament kicks off on July 24 – two days before the Olympic Games opening ceremony – and Asia will be represented by three teams: Japan, Uzbekistan and Iraq. Japan and Uzbekistan qualified by reaching the final of the AFC U23 Asian Cup and were joined by Iraq, who beat Indonesia in the play-off for third place. Also on July 24, Uzbekistan will play Spain in Group C at the Parc des Princes in Paris (3pm) and Japan will play Paraguay in Group D at Bordeaux (7pm).
